A tiny home built, installed, and council approved for you?
Now that’s the Easy Life
But why bother with the expense of approvals when a tiny home on wheels can skirt some council requirements because it’s legally (kind of) a “caravan”?
“Our home is gone. What’re we going to do?”
My wife and I have a system for phone calls when I’m at work. First call—if I’m busy—I’ll ignore. Whatever she needs isn’t super important (don’t tell her I said any of her questions are unimportant!).
If I bounce the first call and she calls again… that’s code for “This is an emergency. You need to answer.”
So I did.
It was -20 degrees celsius outside in the US where we were living at the time (we’re back in Aus now, and lemme tell you what, -20 has put QLD winters into perspective). The pipes for the apartment above ours had frozen then burst.
Water was flooding—at mains pressure—around electrical cabling and pouring through lights and turning the gyprock ceiling to mush, caving it in while she was trying to get our three year old son out of the apartment—with no time even to protect him against the frost-bite-inducing cold outside…
Just like that, our home was gone.
The weeks that followed were spent trying to piece our life back together from a hotel room while my work never paused and the bills continued to mount.
So when the postie turns up at a mailbox with a council eviction notice because someone’s THOW (tiny home on wheels) isn’t up to code… I can empathise.
It’s gut wrenching to have your home ripped away from you.
“Insurance is a nightmare. Half the companies treat it like a caravan, the other half treat it like a house, and neither wants to cover it properly.”
You do everything you can to have a secure roof over your head. That’s no mean feat in Australia.
If you rent, you’re constantly throwing away money while waiting for the landlord to ratchet up the rent…
Again.
But unless you’re part of the lucky few, buying a traditional home and land package is about as likely as winning the Gold Lotto.
It feels like the only valid option is to buy a THOW, sneak it onto some land somewhere, and pray Karen next door doesn’t dob you in for living in a “caravan”.
At least with a THOW you can just hook it up to a ute and drive it away if the council complains… right?
Sadly, you can’t always.
The majority of THOWs—the ones large enough to call a home at least—are on 4.5 tonne trailers. Old mate and his Ranger ain’t gonna be able to safely shift that.
You’re out of pocket thousands to hire a company to come in with a vehicle large enough to tow the trailer and move it for you. Plus the cost of getting everything levelled and hooked back up at the next place.
All to once again be waiting, hoping, praying, that you can stay for longer this time.
And on top of it all, even getting your THOW properly insured is a stretch. You’re one stiff breeze away from losing your home and the desperately hard earned cash you used to purchase it.
But that’s what thousands of Aussies are being forced to do. That or live on the streets.
But what if there was a way to own a tiny home…
And qualify for real insurance…
And be safe from council ire?
“Council actually approved it faster as an ancillary dwelling because it looked like a proper cabin, not a caravan.”
There is a way.
At Snug Life Tiny Homes, we tackle exactly that: Getting a roof over your head and appeasing the council so that you can go to work peacefully, without worrying about the dreaded phone call.
We’re a QBCC licensed company who build THOSs (say that ten times fast), tiny homes on skids. Doing so allows us to more effectively build to NCC standards and deliver you a Class 1a Dwelling, ready for council approvals.
Building on a skid also saves a small fortune because no expensive trailer is involved.
Those cost savings we put straight into the Easy Life bundle for our customers.
What is the Easy Life?
